Captiva Island - Family Beach Photos

Three Generations at Sunset | Family Photos at Tween Waters Inn

There’s something especially meaningful about photographing three generations together. Grandparents, adult children, and grandchildren all in one place, at one moment in time those are the kinds of images that only grow more valuable with every passing year.

This family chose to gather at Captiva Island and stay at the always-charming Tween Waters Inn, where we met on the beach at sunset for a relaxed, joyful session. The light was soft, the Gulf was calm, and the connection between generations was unmistakable. These are the sessions where laughter comes easily, and the photographs feel effortless because the relationships are real.

Check out these family photos we captured. Then read down below for some details you should know before you have a family photo shoot on Captiva Island...

Family Reunion Captiva Island

Why Captiva Island Feels So Different

One of the things that makes Captiva Island so special is its true sense of seclusion. Once you’re on the island, you’re a long drive from chain stores, big-box shopping, and anything resembling a Target or Walmart. Instead, you’ll find locally owned shops, independent restaurants, and an old-Florida pace that invites you to slow down.

Most families know and love this going in, that’s why they chose Captiva in the first place.

What often surprises people, though, is what happens when it’s time to book family photos.

The Captiva Photographer Question Most People Don’t Expect

Because Captiva is remote, especially during season, many photographers charge additional travel fees for sessions on the island. With drive times easily exceeding an hour each way, that’s understandable.

But it’s not something I’ve ever done.

My standard family photo session is always available (and very welcome) on Captiva Island, with no added travel charge. If you’re staying on Captiva, you’re not an exception, you’re exactly where I love to work.

Why I’ll Always Say Yes to Captiva

Captiva Island is where my professional photography career truly began.

More than 20 years ago, my very first job out of photography school was photographing guests at South Seas Resort. That position had me driving to and from the island six days a week for several years, photographing families from all over the country who were making memories together on those beaches.

There’s still something nostalgic about that drive out to Captiva. Even now, after hundreds of sessions on the island, it feels familiar in the best possible way. I know the beaches, the light, the tides, and the timing that makes sunset sessions work beautifully, especially for multi-generation families where comfort and ease matter like this one.

And yes… I’ll absolutely admit that a stop for Bubble Room cake to-go doesn’t hurt either. 😉

Capturing Multi-Generation Family Photos on Captiva

For three-generation sessions like this one, I focus on:

  • Natural groupings that feel relaxed, not stiff

  • Individual moments between grandparents and grandchildren

  • A mix of classic portraits and genuine interaction

  • Keeping the pace easy so everyone enjoys the experience

Sunset on Captiva provides a calm, flattering light that works beautifully for all ages and the wide beaches at Tween Waters make it easy to create variety without walking far.

If you’re planning a family gathering on Captiva Island or the sister island, Sanibel, and wondering whether professional photos are worth the effort, the answer is almost always yes. These are the images that become the anchors, the ones future generations will recognize themselves in and the ones that will always be more special than those a vacation snapshots you grab with your phone.

And of course, if you’re staying on Captiva?
I’ll always say yes to coming out there!
