at Sundial Beach Resort | Sanibel Island

There is something truly special about photographing families on vacation, and this sunset session at Sundial Beach Resort on Sanibel Island was one of those evenings that reminds me why I love what I do.

This family was visiting Sanibel with multiple generations together: grandparents, adult children, and grandchildren all sharing the same beach week. Those are the kinds of moments that deserve to be documented. Vacations like this don’t happen often, and having everyone together, relaxed, barefoot, and laughing at the water’s edge creates the most meaningful photographs.

Why Sundial Beach Resort Is a Perfect Photo Location

The Sundial Beach Resort is one of my favorite spots for Sanibel Island family photography, especially at sunset. One of the biggest advantages of this location is the variety of backdrops available within a short walk.

We were able to photograph this family:

• Against lush tropical palm trees

• With natural greenery that adds depth and texture

• Along the shoreline with the open water of the Gulf of Mexico

• And finally, with the soft pastel sunset sky reflecting off the waves

This variety allows me to create a gallery that feels full and diverse, even within one session. It’s especially helpful for larger, multi-generation groups because it keeps the experience moving and fun while giving each combination its own look.

Multi-Generation Family Beach Photos on Sanibel

This session included grandparents and grandchildren, which always makes my heart happy. We took time to photograph the entire family together, then broke off into smaller groupings: individual families, sibling groups, grandparents with grandkids, and candid moments in between.

One of my favorite things about extended family photo sessions is watching everyone relax into the experience. At first, it’s about “getting the picture,” but quickly it becomes about the shared experience: the laughter, the inside jokes, the kids racing the waves, and the quiet moments between generations.

Those are the moments that matter most, and they’re exactly what I aim to capture.

Why I Love Vacation Family Photo Sessions

As a photographer, I genuinely enjoy these kinds of sessions. Vacation family photo shoots on Sanibel Island have a different energy. There’s less rushing, fewer distractions, and a sense that everyone is fully present.

These sessions don’t feel stiff or forced, they feel like memories unfolding naturally. And let's be honest, back home there is always something more going on. Sports practice, tutoring, work meetings, get togethers... There is always something that has us rushing when we are planning the family photo shoot at home, but on vacation there is this beautiful moment where time doesn't need to be rushed.
