Having engagement photos taken is a tradition that goes back a long way. Long before social media, couples would visit the small photo studio on the corner of town and have a portrait taken to announce their upcoming wedding. Those photos would appear in the local newspaper, proudly sharing the news with the community.

Over the years I’ve photographed countless engagement sessions, and I’ve had my clients’ photos published everywhere from the New York Times to the Fort Myers News-Press. Every single one has been exciting to me, no matter where it appeared.

But engagement photos have definitely changed since I first started my photography business a few years (ok.... decades!!) ago.

They’ve become more relaxed. Less about posing perfectly and more about capturing personality. Today it’s about documenting a moment in time, the excitement, the emotion, and the hopes you have for the future.

Because while it might feel like everyday life right now, time moves quickly.

One day you’ll look back and remember when this was the season of dreaming about your wedding. When the future felt wide open and full of plans and celebrations ahead. These photos become little mile markers along the road of your life together.

Someday, when you’re older, they’ll remind you of who you were at the beginning of the journey.

That’s why I always encourage couples to truly embrace the experience. Kick off your shoes on Captiva Island. Run through the surf on Sanibel. Laugh, be playful, be calm, be yourselves. Capture the real moments, the fun, the joy, and the quiet in-between.

Because someday life will look very different, and no amount of quick selfies or snapshots will ever capture this chapter in quite the same way.

These engagement photos were taken at Tween Waters on Captiva Island, and that’s exactly what we did. We laughed, we shared the joy of the moment, and we captured a little piece of who they were during this season of life.

Today their story has moved on to a new chapter. They’re now proud parents to an adorable baby and building a beautiful life together.

But this chapter — the one where they were dreaming about the future and standing barefoot in the sand at sunset — will always live in these photographs.
