Why Sanibel and Captiva Island Are the Perfect Destination for a Large Family Group Vacation

That’s why Sanibel and Captiva Island are such incredible destinations for family reunions and multi-family vacations. The islands are naturally designed for relaxed, shared experiences, making it easy for everyone to gather together while still having space to spread out.

One of the biggest advantages of Sanibel and Captiva is the style of accommodations available on the islands.

Unlike many beach destinations that are dominated by hotel rooms, the majority of rentals here are condominiums. That means you’ll find endless options for two, three, and four-bedroom units.

For large family groups, this is ideal.

Instead of squeezing everyone into separate hotel rooms, families can stay together in spacious units with:

• Full kitchens

• Living rooms for gathering

• Multiple bedrooms for privacy

• Large balconies overlooking the water

It creates the perfect setup for shared meals, game nights, and relaxed evenings together after a day at the beach.

Cooking your own dinners and creating your own fun is a big part of the Sanibel and Captiva experience. Many families love the flexibility of grocery shopping locally and preparing meals together instead of coordinating reservations for a big group every night.

Not to say there aren't TONS of great restaurants too!  

A Great Option for Large Groups: South Seas

This particular family photo session was photographed on Captiva Island at South Seas, one of the most popular places for large family gatherings.

South Seas is especially well suited for reunions because it offers a variety of accommodation options, including:

• Condo rentals

• Multi-bedroom units

• Even private homes available for short-term rental

The resort itself feels like a small village, which makes it perfect for large families who want convenience without constantly needing to drive.

You can easily get around the property by golf cart, and there are plenty of amenities within reach including:

• A general store

• Several restaurants

• An incredible pool complex

• Beach access throughout the property

For families traveling together, it makes everything simple and fun.

Plenty of Activities for Everyone

Another reason South Seas works so well for family reunions is the variety of activities available right on the property.

One of the highlights for many groups is Captiva Cruises, which departs directly from South Seas Resort. Families can easily hop aboard a boat for an unforgettable outing together.

A dolphin cruise is always a favorite with kids and adults alike, and it’s a fantastic shared experience for the entire group.

Whether your family prefers relaxing on the beach, exploring the island, or heading out on the water, there’s truly something for everyone.

Incredible Backdrops for Family Photos

Sanibel and Captiva are also known for their beautiful natural scenery, which makes them an amazing place to capture family photos while everyone is together.

For this session at South Seas, we started near the golf course area, which provides beautiful shaded spaces and greenery. Then we worked our way toward the open water, where the bright blue background creates a completely different look.

That combination made for a really nice variety of images in one session.

Morning sessions aren’t always ideal for lighting, but at South Seas there are plenty of shaded areas that allow for soft, flattering light even earlier in the day.

That said, I still typically suggest scheduling photo sessions around sunset whenever possible. Not only does the sky often become gorgeous at that time of day, but it’s also usually cooler and easier for everyone to see comfortably.

Of course, when you’re coordinating a large family reunion, sunset isn’t always an option. With enough planning and the right locations, we can still create beautiful images at other times of day.

Book Your Family Photo Session Early

If you’re planning a family reunion on Sanibel or Captiva, I highly recommend booking your family photo session early.

The earlier we schedule it, the more flexibility we’ll have to find a time that works well with both your family’s schedule and the best lighting conditions.

Large family gatherings are special moments that don’t happen very often. Having everyone together on the beach is the perfect opportunity to capture memories that your family will treasure for years to come.
