Captiva Island Weddings: What to Know Before Getting Married on Captiva Island
If you’re dreaming of a Captiva Island wedding, you’re not alone. This tiny barrier island off the southwest coast of Florida is one of the most beautiful places in the country to say “I do.”
With tropical landscapes, soft white sand beaches, and legendary Gulf Coast sunsets, Captiva feels like a destination wedding location without leaving the United States.
But while getting married on Captiva Island is absolutely magical, there are a few realities couples should know before planning their wedding here.
As a photographer who has photographed dozens of weddings on Captiva Island, I’ve seen what works beautifully — and what can surprise couples if they’re not prepared.
Let’s talk about the good… and the not-so-good about planning a Captiva Island wedding.
But first check out some hightlights for this wedding at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island!
The Good: Captiva Island Is One of the Most Beautiful Wedding Locations in the World
There’s a reason couples travel from all over the country to get married here.
Captiva Island offers something that’s increasingly rare: natural beauty that feels untouched and peaceful.
The beaches stretch for miles, the sand is soft and white, and the sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico are some of the most dramatic in Florida.
I’ve photographed weddings on beaches across Florida, the Caribbean, and Mexico and Captiva consistently ranks among the most beautiful settings.
Some of the reasons couples love getting married here:
-
Wide, uncrowded beaches
-
Gorgeous Gulf sunsets for wedding photos
-
Tropical vegetation and palm trees (seriously check out those palm trees!)
-
A relaxed island atmosphere
-
Destination-style weddings without leaving the U.S.
One of the most iconic venues on the island is South Seas Island Resort, which sits on the northern end of Captiva. The property features sprawling beaches, lush tropical landscaping, and incredible photo locations.
It’s the kind of place where every direction you turn looks like a postcard.
The Reality: Captiva Island Is Remote
One of the things that makes Captiva so beautiful is also what makes it challenging.
Captiva Island is remote.
While you can drive there, it’s still an island and that affects logistics.
For example:
-
Uber and rideshare services are very limited
-
There are no major grocery stores on Captiva
-
Most supplies require a trip over to Sanibel Island if not all the way to Fort Myers mainland.
I once photographed a wedding where the ceremony was planned at Chapel By The Sea while guests were staying at a rental home across the island. The couple initially planned for everyone to simply call Ubers to get to the ceremony.
Luckily we talked through the plan ahead of time.
Because on Captiva, that could have become a huge problem.
Transportation should always be planned intentionally, especially if guests are spread across multiple houses or hotels.
Plan Transportation for Your Wedding Guests
If your wedding guests are staying in vacation rentals across the island, it’s best to arrange transportation ahead of time.
Options couples often use include:
-
Private shuttle services
-
Guest transportation vans
-
Organized carpool plans
-
Renting golf carts for nearby locations
The key is not assuming rideshare apps will solve the problem.
Captiva simply doesn’t operate like a big city.
Shopping and Supplies Are Limited
Another thing to know about planning a wedding on Captiva Island: shopping options are minimal.
Captiva has a small island store that carries essentials, but selection is limited and prices are higher than mainland stores.
If you need a full grocery store, the closest option is Jerry's Foods, located about 25 minutes away on neighboring Sanibel Island.
And if you need something like Target or larger stores, you’ll need to drive another 20 minutes beyond that onto the mainland.
For weddings, this means:
-
Bring important supplies with you
-
Don’t assume you can easily run errands
-
Plan grocery and alcohol runs ahead of time
-
Expect island prices for last-minute items
A little preparation goes a long way.
The Payoff: Incredible Wedding Photos
All of those logistics are worth it.
Because once you’re standing on the beach at sunset, Captiva delivers one of the most beautiful wedding backdrops anywhere.
The light here is soft and golden, the horizon over the Gulf is wide open, and the tropical surroundings create an incredible atmosphere for wedding photos.
From beach ceremonies to sunset portraits, Captiva Island wedding photography is simply stunning.
For couples looking for a destination-style wedding with breathtaking scenery, it’s hard to beat.
Planning a Captiva Island Wedding
If you’re considering getting married on Captiva Island, the key is simply planning the logistics early.
Once transportation and supplies are sorted out, the rest of the experience becomes exactly what couples dream of: A relaxed island celebration surrounded by the beauty of the Gulf Coast.
And when the sun sets over the water and your wedding photos capture that moment forever, you’ll understand why so many couples fall in love with Captiva weddings.
