One of the biggest reasons I don’t typically suggest scheduling beach photo sessions in the late morning or afternoon is because it can be difficult lighting for family photography here in Southwest Florida.
Our light is not the same as midday light up north. It's harsh.
I’ve photographed families everywhere from Iowa to New York, and what surprises many vacationing families is that the mid-day sun they’re used to at home feels completely different here on Sanibel. The Southwest Florida sun is much more intense, more direct, and more reflective off the sand and water, which can make it genuinely hard to see.
That’s when the squinting starts. And eyes barely open isn't a good look for family photos!
Mid-morning light on the beach is bright, overhead, and offers very little directional softness. It can make even the most relaxed family feel uncomfortable when they’re asked to look straight into the camera.
But this is where experience (and location) really matter.
This sweet family was staying at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa which offers something we don’t always have at every Sanibel Island beach resort:
beautiful tropical backdrops with natural shade.
So while we absolutely stepped out onto the bright beach for some of those classic Sanibel views, that’s where we focused more on movement, interaction, and candid moments, times when looking directly into the camera isn’t as important as simply being together.
Then we tucked back into the palms, pathways, and greenery for those relaxed, softly lit portraits where everyone can open their eyes and enjoy the moment.
This family was visiting on vacation and I’ve had the joy of working with them before as return clients. They’ve been coming to Sanibel for years (like so many of my Impressions Photography families), and when a place becomes this important to your story, photos here become more than just an annual tradition.
They become a way of remembering
this time,
this place,
and the feeling of being together in it.
Because Sanibel isn’t just where you went on vacation…
it’s part of your family history now. 💛
