If you’ve been researching Southwest Florida beaches for your family vacation, you’ve probably heard the same thing over and over again:

As someone who has photographed thousands of families on Sanibel Island, I can tell you with complete honesty: Yes. Sanibel really is covered in shells.

I started my photography career working on Sanibel and Captiva Islands straight out of college in 1997. Since then, I’ve spent countless evenings walking the shoreline with vacationing families during their sunset beach photo sessions.
And here’s something I’ve realized over the years:
I have never photographed a family on a Sanibel beach where we didn’t find shells.
Not once.
Whether we’re meeting near Lighthouse Beach, Bowman’s Beach, or one of the many Gulf-front access points along West Gulf Drive, the experience is always the same. As families walk out toward the water for their portraits, kids immediately notice the shells beneath their feet. It’s impossible not to.
Sanibel’s unique east-west orientation acts like a natural scoop in the Gulf of Mexico, catching shells that wash in with the tides. The result is beaches that are consistently lined with beautiful shell varieties from coquinas and scallops to whelks and the occasional conch or starfish discovery.
Shelling Adds to the Family Photo Experience
One of the things that surprises many families is how much shelling becomes part of their Sanibel family photo session experience.
While we absolutely focus on capturing those beautiful sunset portraits you’ll frame and hang in your home, there are always little in-between moments that unfold naturally:
Kids excitedly picking up a sand dollar
Parents helping identify a shell
Siblings comparing their finds
Or everyone gathering around to inspect something especially unique
During this particular beach session, the kids were having an absolute blast stopping between photos to check out the shells they found along the shoreline. At one point, we even paused to admire a giant conch and a starfish and of course, document that moment too.
These unscripted discoveries add a level of fun and authenticity that you simply can’t pose or plan for. Suddenly, the evening feels less like a formal photo shoot and more like a relaxed family adventure that just happens to be professionally photographed.
Why Sanibel Is One of the Best Beaches for Families
Many families choose Sanibel Island for their vacation specifically because it offers something that goes beyond beautiful scenery.
The beach becomes interactive.
Children stay engaged because there’s always something new to discover. Parents get to enjoy a slower pace. And when it comes time for family photos, everyone is already relaxed, happy, and fully immersed in the experience.
That energy always shows up in the final images.
