I've been photographing families on Sanibel Island for 30 years. I've learned how to photograph toddlers who refuse to smile, teenagers who don't want to be there, and large families who can't agree on anything. But there's one thing I still can't control. The weather!!
Planning family beach photos in Southwest Florida? Here's why I don't trust the weather forecast a week in advance, and how I handle unpredictable weather for family photography sessions on Sanibel Island, Captiva, Fort Myers Beach, and throughout SWFL.
The weather is going to do whatever it wants.
And while that's probably true everywhere, here in Southwest Florida, especially around Sanibel Island, Captiva, and our beautiful beach communities, I'm going to say something bold.
Trying to predict the weather for your sunset family photo shoot a week in advance is almost foolish.
I know. You've planned your vacation, coordinated everyone's outfits, convinced the entire family to participate in photos, and now your weather app is showing thunderstorms on the exact evening of your session.
Before you panic, let me share something I've learned from three decades of photographing families on our beaches.
That forecast might mean absolutely nothing.
How I Predict the Weather for Family Beach Photos in Southwest Florida
Over the years, I've developed a pretty simple method for deciding whether the weather will cooperate for a sunset family photography session.
I wait.
That's it. Well, almost.
About four to five hours before our scheduled photo shoot, I start studying the local weather radar. At that point, I can usually make a reasonably informed prediction about whether rain will interfere with our session.
Is it foolproof? Absolutely not.
But after 30 years of watching storms roll across Southwest Florida, it's about as close to an accurate prediction as I'm going to get.
And in the summer? Forget trying to make that decision first thing in the morning.
Our afternoon thunderstorms can develop, shift direction, disappear, or pop up seemingly out of nowhere. A forecast that looks terrible at breakfast can turn into a beautiful sunset. And occasionally, the opposite happens.
With a few exceptions involving widespread storms that clearly aren't going anywhere, I don't even try to predict our evening weather that early in the day.
Why I Don't Cancel Sanibel Beach Photo Sessions Based on a Forecast Two Days Away
Every now and then, understandably, I get pressure to make a weather decision a day or two before a scheduled family photo shoot.
Families are on vacation. They have dinner reservations, boat trips, beach days, and a limited number of evenings to fit everything in.
I completely understand wanting an answer.
But here's the problem.
When we make those decisions too early, we're wrong surprisingly often.
In fact, I have a perfect example from this week.
A hurricane is currently looming in the Gulf, heading toward North Florida, and Southwest Florida was expected to see rain from its outer bands.
That seemed like a pretty sure bet.
So we started discussing the weather, looking at backup dates, and considering whether to move a scheduled sunset family photo shoot.
And then we woke up to sunshine.
Those anticipated rain bands had shifted, and suddenly the weather looked beautiful for our session.
Even with a hurricane in the Gulf, the forecast changed enough to make our earlier concerns unnecessary.
And there I was, kicking myself.
Thirty years of photographing families in Southwest Florida, and I still occasionally get sucked into talking about the weather before it's time.
Maybe in my next 30 years I'll finally learn :)
As I write this, today's sunset family photo shoot is going ahead as scheduled. The radar looks great, the sunshine is here, and we're expecting beautiful conditions.
Another reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do is wait and see.
What Happens if It Rains During Your Sanibel or Fort Myers Beach Family Photo Shoot?
If you're scheduling family beach photography with Impressions Photography, please know that unpredictable weather is something I'm very accustomed to working around.
I want you to have beautiful photos, but I also want the experience to be enjoyable. Nobody wants to spend their vacation stressing over a weather app.
Here's how I handle it.
1. We Make Our Weather Decision in the Afternoon
For sunset family photo sessions, I generally wait until about four to five hours before our appointment to evaluate the radar and make a decision.
That gives us a much better picture of what's actually happening around Sanibel, Captiva, Fort Myers Beach, and the surrounding areas.
Sometimes we can see a storm moving through that will be long gone before sunset. Other times, the radar makes it clear that we need a backup plan.
Either way, I'd much rather make that decision with useful information than guess two days earlier.
2. We Can Reschedule Earlier if It Makes Your Vacation Easier
There is one important exception to my wait-and-see approach.
If there's a significant chance of rain and you have flexibility in your vacation schedule, I'm always happy to discuss moving your appointment to another available day.
Sometimes that's simply the easier choice.
If you're trying to fit in a dolphin cruise, dinner reservations, beach time, and family photos, moving our session can take some pressure off your vacation.
It doesn't necessarily mean the original date would have been rained out. It just means we have the flexibility to choose what works best for you.
3. We Can Change the Time of Your Family Photo Shoot
I love sunset photography. The beautiful light along our Southwest Florida beaches is one of my favorite things about photographing families here.
And when possible, I'll always encourage a sunset session.
But mornings can be a wonderful alternative, especially during our summer rainy season when afternoon thunderstorms are common.
If the weather pattern makes a morning session a better choice, and our schedules allow it, that's absolutely something we can consider.
4. Sometimes We Just Move to a Different Beach
Here's something that surprises a lot of visitors.
It can be pouring rain on Sanibel Island and perfectly sunny at another beach just 20 minutes away.
Southwest Florida rain can be incredibly localized.
Depending on the weather and the locations available to us, sometimes changing beaches is all it takes to save a family photo session.
That's one of the benefits of working with a photographer who knows the area and has spent decades watching our weather patterns.
5. We Can Save Your Family Photos for Your Next Southwest Florida Vacation
Many of the families I photograph return to Sanibel, Captiva, and Southwest Florida year after year.
If the weather simply doesn't cooperate during your visit, postponing your session until your next trip may be an option.
I'd much rather help you create the photos you've been looking forward to than force a session under conditions that aren't going to give us the results we want.
6. I'll Do Everything Reasonably Possible to Make Your Session Happen
Flexibility has always been an important part of how I work with families.
Over the years, that has even meant meeting families for their photo shoot on the morning they're heading to the airport!
When weather creates a problem, I do my best to find a solution that works for everyone.
And if weather conditions beyond our control make it impossible to photograph your family during your visit, and we simply cannot find another opportunity to meet, I refund your session fee.
I don't want you worrying about losing your money because a Florida thunderstorm decided to show up.
Is Sunset Still the Best Time for Family Beach Photos in Southwest Florida?
Absolutely!
Despite our unpredictable weather, sunset remains my favorite time to photograph families on the beaches of Sanibel Island, Captiva, and Fort Myers Beach.
The light can be beautiful, the temperatures often become more comfortable, and there's something special about ending a vacation day together on the beach.
And here's another little secret from someone who has photographed thousands of families along our coastline.
A few clouds aren't necessarily a bad thing.
Sometimes those clouds soften the light beautifully. And occasionally, the skies that looked a little questionable earlier in the afternoon produce the most spectacular sunset colors.
So a forecast showing clouds or a chance of rain doesn't automatically mean your family photos are ruined.
Not even close.
Planning Family Beach Photography on Sanibel, Captiva, or Fort Myers Beach? Don't Let the Forecast Scare You.
If you're visiting Southwest Florida and considering professional family photos on the beach, here's what I hope you'll remember.
We have a whole lot more sunshine than rain here.
Yes, we have unpredictable thunderstorms. Yes, sometimes we need to adjust our plans. And yes, occasionally the weather wins.
But after 30 years of photographing families throughout Southwest Florida, I've learned that patience, flexibility, and knowing our local beaches go a long way.
So if you look at your weather app a week before your vacation and see little thunderstorm symbols every afternoon, don't let that convince you that your beach photos aren't going to happen.
We'll watch the weather when the time comes.
We'll make a plan based on what's actually happening.
And I'll bring those 30 years of experience to help us make the most of whatever Southwest Florida decides to throw our way.
Because beautiful family photographs are worth a little flexibility.
And I promise, there's a very good chance we'll have plenty of sunshine waiting for us.
