After more than 25 years as a Sanibel Island family photographer, I've found that the best family photos rarely happen when children are standing perfectly still. Instead, they happen when kids are having fun.
This recent family photography session on Sanibel Island included three young boys. Rather than spending the entire session posing, we focused on keeping the experience active and enjoyable. Beach photography sessions work especially well for young children because they have room to move, explore, and simply be themselves.
Keep Moving
Young children don't always have the longest attention spans. One of the best ways to create natural family photos is to keep the session moving. Walking along the beach, exploring the shoreline, and interacting with one another often creates more authentic expressions than asking children to hold a pose for several minutes.

During family photo sessions, I often use games, movement, and silly prompts to help children relax. Sometimes something as simple as having everyone say "stinky feet" creates the genuine laughter parents hope to capture.
