Should I Do a First Look at My Wedding

What Is a First Look at a Wedding?

Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach & Captiva Wedding Suggestions

I've had more and more brides adding "extra" first looks to their wedding day and I thought this would be a good place to discuss the pros and cons of that. But first, if you're new to the wedding world, let me explain a "first look"

A first look is a private moment before your ceremony where you and your partner see each other for the first time. Instead of waiting until you walk down the aisle, you choose a quiet, intentional setting: often for my weddings it's somewhere scenic around Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, or Fort Myers Beach and you share that reaction together while your photographer captures it.

It usually takes about 10 minutes, but it is a special moment that I often schedule into my clients photo timeline.

Should You Do a First Look for Your SWFL Wedding?

That's definitely a personal decision and I've seen Southwest Florida weddings work well with as well as without a first look.

Here’s why it works so well for Sanibel, Captiva, and Fort Myers Beach weddings:

  • It allows for you to do your organized photos before the ceremony when things are less rushed
  • It allows you to enjoy cocktail hour instead of taking all your photos during it
  • You get a private, emotional moment together before the day gets busy

From my standpoint it can be helpful because it gives us time to create beautiful portraits in some of the best locations Southwest Florida has to offer without feeling rushed.

First Look Wedding Timeline Benefits (SWFL Weddings)

If you’re planning a Fort Myers Beach wedding timeline or a Captiva Island beach wedding, a first look allows us to:

  • Capture couple portraits before the ceremony
  • Photograph wedding party and some family early
  • Take advantage of soft, flattering light
  • Build a timeline that feels relaxed instead of rushed

It’s one of the easiest ways to make your wedding day feel smoother.

But What About First Looks with Everyone Else?

Now this is where I’m going to be honest in a way most photographers aren’t.

You’ve probably seen all the ideas:

  • First look with dad
  • First look with bridesmaids
  • First look with mom or stepdad
  • First look with groomsmen

I literally photographed a wedding where there were FIVE different groups that needed a special reveal moment with the bride.

And that may sound like a great idea.

But here’s the truth when it comes to your SWFL wedding timeline

The Hidden Timeline Cost (That Impacts Your Photos)

Every single one of those “first looks” takes time.

Not just a quick second—a structured 10–15 minutes each.

For every one, we need to:

  • Get to a special location
  • Keep you hidden from other guests
  • Bring people in that special person
  • Wait (because someone is always not quite ready)
  • Capture the reaction
  • Then continue photographing it

What feels like a quick emotional moment turns into a full segment of your timeline.

So if you plan:

  • First look with dad
  • First look with bridesmaids
  • First look with mom

You’ve now added 30–45 minutes to your wedding day schedule.

What You’re Giving Up (Especially at Beach Weddings)

This is the part couples don’t realize until later.

When your timeline fills up with staged “first look” moments, you start losing:

  • Time in the best natural light (huge for Sanibel and Captiva sunset weddings)
  • Flexibility to move locations
  • Breathing room in your day
  • Opportunities for natural, candid photos

And eventually, I have to step in and say,
“Okay, we need to move on…”

Which no one wants in the middle of an emotional moment.

Are These First Look Photos Worth It?

I’m not saying they’re bad.

They’re not.

But they’re often:

  • Repetitive
  • More staged than expected
  • Less emotional than imagined
  • The time they take replaces other photos
  • And they feel rushed because of time pressure

And when you’re planning a Southwest Florida wedding, where light, weather, and location matter so much… time is everything.

A Better Way to Get More Meaningful Photos

Instead of scheduling multiple “first look” moments…

Let those reactions happen naturally.

  • Let your dad walk in the room where you got ready
  • Let your bridesmaids be there as you put on your dress
  • Let your mom see you in real time

These moments:

  • Feel more real
  • Happen organically
  • And photograph beautifully

If You Do Want Multiple First Looks…

You absolutely can—just plan for it.

Add 10–15 minutes per person or group into your timeline.

This is especially important for:

  • Fort Myers Beach weddings (where locations can be crowded)
  • Sanibel weddings (where travel between spots can take time)
  • Captiva weddings (where timing and light are everything)

Planning ahead ensures you don’t feel rushed or lose out on other photos.

Questions to Ask Before Planning Your Wedding First Looks

  • Do I want a private moment with my partner before the ceremony?
  • How important is cocktail hour to me?
  • Am I willing to extend my timeline for additional first looks?
  • Do I prefer natural moments or planned reveals?
  • What matters most for my photos - variety, light, or specific reactions?

Final Thoughts for Sanibel, Captiva & Fort Myers Beach Weddings

A first look with your partner?
Always a strong choice.

Multiple staged “first looks” with everyone else?
Just make sure you understand the trade-offs.

Because your wedding day—especially here in Southwest Florida—isn’t just about fitting everything in.

It’s about:

  • Protecting your time
  • Taking advantage of incredible locations
  • And allowing real moments to unfold
