The honest answer? Yes… and no.
If you’re dreaming about a vacation that feels like you’ve left Florida and landed somewhere closer to the Caribbean, Captiva absolutely delivers. It’s quiet. It’s tucked away. The beaches are soft and wide, the sunsets feel unreal, and everything about it invites you to slow down.
But here’s the part most travel guides won’t tell you…
If you’re visiting Southwest Florida and thinking, “We’ll just pop over to Captiva for the day,” it’s often not the best plan.
It’s a drive. A real one. From areas like Cape Coral or even parts of Fort Myers, you could be looking at well over an hour drive just to get there and then you have to do it all over again to get back.
And if your trip here is short, that’s a big chunk of time to spend in the car when there are beautiful, much closer options like Fort Myers Beach.
But the biggest reason I rarely recommend Captiva for a quick visit or for meeting clients for photos is simple:
Parking is extremely limited.
Not “a little tricky”… very limited.
If you’re not staying on the island, there’s a real chance you could arrive and have nowhere to go. You can park at a restaurant and have dinner (and I suggest that if you're coming for a few days) but when you’re planning something like sunset photos, finding public beach parking is not a risk worth taking.
That’s why, even though Captiva is stunning, I usually guide people toward Sanibel Island instead.
You’ll get the same natural beauty, but with far more accessibility and flexibility.
Now, if you are staying on Captiva?
That’s where it becomes magic. Spend a full week there and it feels like its own little world.
That’s how Captiva is meant to be experienced.
The family featured here?
They were staying in a home right on the island. I met them there, and we simply walked down to the beach for their session.
And that’s the difference.
Captiva isn’t always the best place to go to.
But if you’re already there… it might be one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever experience.
