The Perfect Fort Myers, Sanibel & Captiva Getaway Guide (From a Local Who Loves It Here)

Plan the perfect trip to Southwest Florida.

Travel Guide to SWFL from a local

Here is exactly how I would plan my idea of the perfect Southwest Florida vacation—whether you’re visiting Fort Myers, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, or Fort Myers Beach.

As someone who travels often, there’s one thing that bugs me more than anything else. It’s that moment at the end of a trip when you discover something you didn’t know about… and it’s too late to experience it. The restaurant everyone says you have to try. The one activity you can’t do anywhere else. Or that hidden spot that would have completely changed your trip if you had just known about it sooner. You know what I mean.

So as someone who actually lives here—right near the beauty of Sanibel Island and just down the road from those incredible Fort Myers Beach sunsets—I wanted to share what I would do if I were planning an unforgettable Southwest Florida vacation.

Because the last thing I want is for you to leave here thinking… if only I had known about that!

where to stay in fort myers and sanibel

Where to Stay in the Fort Myers/Sanibel Area

If You Want a True Beach Escape - Head out to Captiva Island and stay at Tween WatersIt’s a little more remote, a little quieter, and has some of the most amazing beaches you’ll find.

If You Want High Energy - Stay on Fort Myers Beach at DiamondHead or Pink Shell. This gives you easy access to restaurants, drinks, nightlife, and all of the fun. If you want to stay up late and keep the energy going, this is the place.

If You Want Classic Sanibel - The Sanibel Inn is a great choice. It’s beautiful, relaxed, and exactly the kind of place people picture when they imagine a Sanibel vacation.

If You Want a Hidden Gem If you’re okay not being directly on the beach but want a central location in the most peaceful setting, this rental home is amazing. I’ve stayed there before, and it felt like a complete oasis. Quiet mornings watching fish jump while drinking coffee and fun afternoons where you walk out the back door and hop in a kayak made it such a winner. And the best part is that it’s just a quick jump over the bridge to one of the most fun downtown areas. Honestly, this one wins if you want something peaceful but still close to everything.

The Experiences You Can’t Miss

Kayak with Manatees - One of the most unique things you can do here is kayaking with manatees at Fort Myers Manatee Park. The best time to do this is December through April, when the colder weather brings manatees into the warm canals. It’s quiet, peaceful, and one of those experiences that feels really special.

Go Shelling on Sanibel Island - Sanibel is known worldwide for shelling, and once you’re there, you’ll understand why. Any public beach is a great place to start. The magic is really in going early, walking slowly, and taking your time. The Sanibel Stoop is real.

Get Out on the Water - If there’s one thing I always recommend, it’s this. Rent a boat from the Sanibel Harbor Marina area and head out to Picnic Island. Stop for lunch at Cabbage Key and make a full day of it.

Check out Pop Stroke, the Tiger Woods woned mini golf spot for something fun and different. This is a date night go to for my husband and I.

Head to Downtown Ft Myers. If you happen to be here on the first or third Friday of the month, head to downtown Fort Myers for Music Walk or Art Walk. But even when it isn't a special event, there are still tons of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. There is always something fun happening there.

If you go to Downtown Ft Myers, grab a drink at Beacon Social. This is the rooftop bar at the Luminary. Every evening at sunset it's a little celebration and it always has the best views you'll find of the city. Then for live music head over to Baystreet Yard.  Just a block away from Becaon Social, it's a great next stop!

Slow It Down with Nature or History

If you like history, walk through the Edison and Ford Winter Estates.

If nature is more your thing, head to the Slough Preserve and enjoy the quieter side of Southwest Florida.

Both are worth doing and give you a different feel for the area.

Boating Southwest Florida

Being out on the water is the version of Florida most tourists miss out on, and it’s worth it. If you don’t want to captain your own boat, a sunset sail is a beautiful option. I suggest Magic Wind Adventures. They have a beautiful sailboat and are really great people to head out on the water with!

You could also book a fishing excursion with Captain Mark at Calusa Fishing Adventures. Or any boat trip with Captiva Cruises will be a great time too!

Sanbel dining options from a local

Eat, Explore, and Enjoy the Local Favorites

Sanibel

Eat at Gramma Dot’s for a classic waterfront meal. This is my favorite!

Grab ice cream at The Shack on Sanibel. It’s one of those simple little stops that just feels like vacation.

Grab dinner at Bimini Bait Shack and check out the fish tank bar and swings.

Stop at Island Time Tiki Bar for a casual drink or meal.

If you want a nicer evening out, do dinner at Cielo’s or the Thistle Lodge at Casa Ybel.

Captiva Island.

Captiva feels like a different world in the best way. Head over for dinner at the Keylime Bistro, then get dessert at the Bubble Room. Walk down Andy Rosse Lane and end the night with sunset on Captiva Island. Or enjoy a meal at the newly reopened Mucky Duck.

Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach

And if you want a full evening of fun, grab dinner and do a pub stroll through Fort Myers Beach. Start at DiamondHead Resort. They have a beautiful restaurant that overlooks the water and a more casual, chairs in the sand option too. Walk up to The Whale and over to Time Square for a full night of fun! Catch live music, watch the sunset, and enjoy a cocktail while you’re at it!

Plan a Family Photo Shoot or Couple Portrait

And while you’re here, this is one of the easiest and most meaningful times to capture family photos.

Impressions Photography specializes in capturing memories for people who are enjoying a Southwest Florida vacation and I truly believe it's the best time to capture those photos.

You’re already together, everyone is more relaxed, and for once you’re not rushing between schedules, school, or everyday life. Add in some of the most beautiful backdrops you’ll find anywhere: from Sanibel’s soft beaches to those glowing Fort Myers sunsets and it just makes sense. Don’t leave without at least one photo of all of you in this moment. Because long after the trip is over, that’s the souvenir you’ll come back to again and again and the one you’ll wish you had if you don’t.

Here are a few photos from recent photo shoots! I offer mini shoots on the beach that take just 20 minutes to capture some of the most memorable vacation pictures.
