Teaching Photography at Sea: Preparing for The Great Photo Voyage

There are two parts of my work that mean the most to me.

I’m a photographer: because capturing meaningful moments for families and couples fills my heart.

And I’m a teacher: because I want other people to feel that same awareness when they realize that a moment in front of them matters enough to preserve.

This week looks a little different than most.

Instead of packing up for a sunset session on Sanibel Island or heading out to Captiva for a multi-generational family photo shoot (and there has been so many of those lately!), I’m preparing to set sail as an instructor on The Great Photo Voyage. It's on a Royal Caribbean cruise and it is a photography workshop held at sea.

During this workshop, I’ll be teaching participants how to:

• Capture meaningful candid moments

• Use natural light to create beautiful portraits

• Compose stronger photographs

• Organize and protect their digital and printed photos

• Preserve their personal memories for the future

While the setting may be a cruise ship instead of the beaches of Fort Myers or Naples, the heart of what I’m teaching is exactly the same thing I bring to every photography session here in Southwest Florida.

Because whether you’re taking pictures on vacation, at a wedding, during a family reunion, or simply documenting everyday life the goal is always the same:

To create photographs that you’ll be grateful to have years from now.

For over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing weddings, engagements, honeymoons, and family vacations across Southwest Florida. From sunset portraits on Fort Myers Beach to quiet mornings on Captiva Island and celebrations on Sanibel, these moments become part of a family’s story.

And they deserve to be captured well and kept safe.

As I get ready to teach this upcoming workshop, it felt like the perfect time to reflect on a few favorite images from the past decade that will always make my heart happy.

These are the kinds of moments that remind me why I do what I do.

Because photographs aren’t just pictures.
They’re time capsules.
